Islands of Coherence

We live in tumultuous times. Individuals report feeling more lonely and isolated than ever, while systems break down and society fragments. And yet, there is more to the story than despair. Through the cracks in our foundation shines a life-affirming light.

Ilya Prigogine, a Nobel Prize-winning chemist, writes: “When a complex system is far from equilibrium, small islands of coherence in a sea of chaos have the capacity to shift the entire system to a higher order.”

This isn’t lofty philosophy. It’s deeply personal. Each one of us has the potential to be an island of coherence in this fragmented world. As we become more familiar with the state of coherence—awake, aligned and sensitive to higher meaning—we realize that we have the capacity to be of service to all sentient beings. In Mahayana Buddhism this is understood as the Bodhisattva vow: a relentless commitment to relieving suffering in all forms.
