About

Lower Lights School of Wisdom is a contemplative community rooted in the Wasatch Front.

Drawing from ancient and living wisdom traditions, we practice waking up the mind, purifying the heart and offering our whole selves to the places, people and existence to which we belong. Our community of practitioners cultivates greater wisdom, healing and wholeness — breathing what is needed into the larger world.

We gather regularly, practice deeply and learn from the streams of wisdom that have shaped human beings across cultures and generations. Together, we seek not only awakening, but its embodiment: bringing greater presence, compassion, freedom and love into the ordinary substance of our lives.

Our mission is to complete the human being, and to contribute the fruits of this process to the building of a more beautiful world.

A Renaissance of Consciousness on the Wasatch Front

There is a movement stirring. The signs of a renaissance are not fullness, but hunger.

Across cultures and eras, communities have responded to moments of fragmentation and loss of meaning by returning to their deepest sources of wisdom and reaching toward something more whole, alive and true. We believe such a renaissance is unfolding now, globally and locally.

At Lower Lights, our stewardship is the Wasatch Front — with this place and within our people. We are attuned to this movement and seek to give it local expression.

Our Objectives

  • We offer contemplative practice, teaching and mentorship to seekers of Love and Freedom.

  • We gather regularly — in person and online — to practice, learn, heal and live into our shared intentions.

  • We meet personal and inherited suffering with the resources of contemplation and relationship, transforming what we have received into something more loving and life-giving.

  • We honor the traditions, identities and perspectives that make us distinct while remaining in genuine relationship across religious, spiritual and cultural difference.

  • We claim responsibility for the particular lands, communities and wisdom traditions we have been given to care for, offering our local efforts for the good of the earth and far beyond.

Our Wisdom Streams

The ancestors have created channels of wisdom and compassion that flow between worlds and across generations. We call this lineage. We draw deeply from ancient and living streams of Wisdom, including the teachings of Yeshua, Sufism, American Buddhism and Integral Polarity Practice. We don't expect everyone in our community to love or belong to the same traditions. Instead, we invite each person to honor the particular traditions, ancestries and sources of Wisdom that have shaped them. We call this orientation metalineage: fully embracing what makes us unique and inspires us spiritually while developing a genuine sense of kinship with others doing the same.

Our Stewardship

We practice locally as our most sincere universal offering.

Lower Lights School of Wisdom is a hyperlocal community of practice with a concern for all of Manifestation. Our stewardship begins with the Wasatch mountains, Great Salt Lake, the buffalo and the birds, the flourishing communities of this valley and the dignity of all beings.

That stewardship also asks us to take seriously the cultural and spiritual inheritance of this place.

Mormonism has profoundly shaped the Wasatch Front and many of the people who gather at Lower Lights School of Wisdom. Our community includes active and faithful Latter-day Saints, post-Mormons, mystics, misfits, people connected primarily through ancestry and heritage, and people with no ties to Mormonism at all.

Our work is not to erase difference, but to cultivate relationship through it — to honor what is distinct while listening for what lies beyond all difference.
