For many years now, we’ve gathered at year’s end to reflect on all the life we have lived, all the joys and sorrows we’ve experienced. Members of the Lower Lights community have found it to be an especially powerful ritual for encountering and metabolizing the year’s disappointments and heartbreaks.
So often we turn away from the pain in our lives. Understandably, we hope for better times ahead and try not to dwell too much on what’s not working in life. But in contemplative practice, there’s no need to avoid this rich aspect of the human adventure. Failure shows us where we break. Sorrow points us more poignantly to what we love.
A poetic friend described our annual ritual as the “Burning of Sorrows” many years ago. The name stuck. Of course, to burn our collective sorrows in the flames of Love, we can’t help but illuminate our profound joys in the same act.
We invite you to join us this year for the Burn—to burn your sorrow, to illuminate your joy, to add to the glow and heat of the Flame that renew us all.
